DJ Danger Mouse, famous for being one half of Gnarls Barkley, and for his 2004 mashup CD They Grey Album (mixing the Beatles ‘White Album’ with Jay-Z’s ‘the Black Album’) is releasing a new album this week, however there is one catch; there wont actually be any music on it.
In the case of the ‘Grey Album,’ record label EMI sent out cease-and-desist letters to all fans who posted the album anywhere online and even threatened those who protested the label’s actions. The label and the DJ are still in an ongoing dispute and therefore Danger Mouse is not allowed to release any music under his own name.
The new album, Dark Night Of The Soul, as a way to get around EMI, will simply be cover art and a blank recordable CD-R. Burn the tracks (however you find them) to the CD-R and enjoy the music, says the DJ.
His official statement reads:

Danger Mouse’s new project Dark Night Of The Soul consists of an album length piece of music by Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and a host of guest vocalists, along with a collection of original David Lynch photography inspired by and based on the music.
The photographs, which provide a visual narrative for the music, are compiled in a limited edition, hand numbered 100+ page book which will now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: ‘For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.’
Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to release the recorded music for Dark Night Of The Soul without fear of being sued by EMI.

After confirming reports in October that they will be collaborating on a “brand new videogame featuring the music of the iconic Beatles,” The Beatles, MTV and Harmonix have announced that “The Beatles: Rock Band” will hit retail shelves on September 9th.
The game will be available on that date in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and will cost $60 USD for the game itself or $160 for new ‘Rock Band’ instruments similar to those used by the Beatles.
Apple Corp. added that the date, 9/09/09, was picked specifically to acknowledge the importance of the number 9 for the band.
MTV added that the game will “allow fans to pick up the guitar, bass, mic or drums and experience The Beatles extraordinary catalog of music through gameplay that takes players on a journey through the legacy and evolution of the band’s legendary career.”
The game will be available on all three major consoles at launch, the Microsoft Xbox 360, the Sony Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii. As with previous Rock Band games, existing instruments will work flawlessly with the game.
The Beatles have sold more than 600 million albums worldwide but have never allowed their music to be available digitally.

The United Press International has reported that a tentative agreement between Apple and former Beatle Paul McCartney had been made which would mean that the Beatles’ back catalog will finally be available for digital distribution on iTunes.
The deal, which could be in excess of $400 million USD, will be split between all the former members of the Beatles, Sony, EMI, and Michael Jackson all of which have some rights to the songs, whether it be in publishing, recording or reproduction.
Paul McCartney recently released his latest solo work for distribution on iTunes and that was followed by the release of John Lennon’s solo work prompting widespread rumors that the Beatles catalog would soon follow. There has been no official announcement from either McCartney or Apple so for now the report is just speculation but we will keep you updated.
