Nintendo has made it official, Wii U games will be on a proprietary disc that is not Blu-ray or DVD.
The confirmation comes via Nintendo president Satoru Iwata following a week of confusion and speculation as to exactly what Wii U games would be published on.
In explaining the move, Iwata says:
We feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.
Furthermore, the Wii U will go “social,” says Iwata (via TR):
After examining the penetration and adoption rate of social networking services like Facebook, etc, we’ve come to the conclusion that we are no longer in a period where we cannot have any connection at all with social networking services.
Rather, I think we’ve come to an era where it’s important to consider how the social graph of the social networking services can work in conjunction with something like a video game platform.

Christopher Poole, founder of the infamous meme site 4chan came out this week claiming that Verizon was “explicitly blocking” access to the site, and it appears Poole may have been right.
Jeff Nelson, a public relations employee for the ISP said via Twitter this morning: “2 of 4Chan affiliates were staging for attacks.” However, “They’re green-lighted for tonight’s network update.”
Poole’s full post earlier had read: “Over the past 72 hours, we’ve been receiving reports from Verizon Wireless customers having difficulty accessing the image boards,” Poole wrote. “After investigating, we found that Verizon is dropping traffic… only on port 80 (HTTP). No other subdomain/IP/port is affected, which leads us to believe this block is intentional. After an hour and a half on the phone, we’ve received confirmation from Verizon’s Network Repair Bureau (NRB) that we are “explicitly blocked.”
Verizon had refused comment until today except to say that they were being bombarded with calls about the issue, adds PCWorld.

Mobile Crunch is reporting today that the popular music video game Rock Band is headed to the iPhone and iPod Touch, including premium content and 4-way multiplayer via Bluetooth.
The confirmation, says the article, comes from the CTIA convention where a kiosk dedicated to mobile Rock Band shows off a splash screen that says Rock Band for iPhone and iPod Touch.
The kiosk only shows the splash screen for about a second so there is little other info available about the upcoming port.
