Francis “Frank” Janosko, a Massachusetts prison inmate, has been given an extra 18-month sentence for hacking a prison computer while he was in jail. The computer had been provided to inmates to help them with legal research for appeals.
Janosko hacked the system and stole personal data on 1100 prison employees, including Social Security Numbers and home addresses.
ComputerWorld explains that the PC used was a “thin client computer that simply connected to another machine on the network and did not store any data itself. The only program it was supposed to run was the prison’s legal research application.”
Prosecutors say the inmate “exploited an idiosyncrasy in the legal research software” which allowed him to access other programs as well as send emails and even download videos.

Download video off YouTube - Have you ever watched a video on youtube.com and found it so profound, so hilarious, or so moving that you wished you could yank it off and stick it on your iPod or save it to your computer? Well, you’re not the only one. Many people wish to remove video’s from these sites.
There have been many ways to do this published before, the original ones complicated and often difficult for the average user to do. Others work, but result in lower video quality. And finally, many save the video’s in an obscure video format that is not compatible with mp3 players or computers.
The first thing to do when preparing to download video off YouTube is to download the necessary software. While there are many software packages that will allow you to do this, there are some features to watch for: what format does the video get saved in, and what does the software cost?
You want the video to be saved as either .avi, .mpeg, .amv, or .wmv; and if you’re like most people, you want a free program.
The best program I have found to date that will meets all the needs of a user perfectly while remaining absolutely free is VDownloader. A simple, free program, simply install it onto your desktop, then follow the directions below:
Be sure that BROWSE VIDEOS is set to youtube.com
The link to the youtube.com page usually popups automatically in VDownloader, but sometimes you must manually insert it. Simply copy and paste the address from the browser into VDownloader URL.

Even YouTube’s most enthusiastic fans (like Michael Wesch, whose Anthropology of YouTube video we mentioned recently) tend to overlook one very disappointing fact — you can’t easily save videos to your hard drive.Luckily it turns out that, while YouTube certainly doesn’t make it easy, it is in fact possible to download and save videos for offline viewing. In fact, there’s a whole cottage industry of developers building tools that allow you to download YouTube videos.
Lifehacker points us to YouTube File Hack, which can be used as either a standalone application or from Internet Explorer via a menu item that offers to download YouTube videos. I took it for a spin this morning and it does indeed work. Now I have my very own copy of skateboarding dog lovingly preserved for all eternity.
While YouTube File Hack is the easiest tool I’ve tested for IE users, it isn’t the only means of grabbing a YouTube movie.Safari users have it easy, just open up Activity Monitor and double click the actual video file. Safari will happily download an FLV for you. Firefox users can check out Lifehacker’s Better YouTube extension which uses Greasemonkey script to insert a “download this video” link next to every YouTube movie.
There are several other Firefox plugin out there, as well as a few other standalone apps. If you have a favorite method be sure to let us know.
