Hat tip to Eazy for requesting a quick tutorial on snagging videos directly from YouTube.

For the uninitiated, YouTube is the Flickr of online video sharing. If you haven’t had a chance to check the service, do so right now. As requested, the following tutorial will assist in download FLV video from  YouTube video sharing service. The following tutorial assumes that you currently have the Firefox browser, Greasemonkey extension, and VLC media player installed.
Navigate to YouTube.com and locate a video. For this particular tutorial, I am going to download “the Story about Suzuki and the dog“.
In the save file prompt, you will notice that the file is titled get_video.php. Title the video accordingly and change the extension from PHP to FLV [essential that step]. Select ‘Save’ and the Flash video file will be downloaded to your desktop.
While dedicated FLV video players are available, the VLC media player is capable of FLV playback.
Once the page has loaded, you should see a red bar towards the top of the page spanning the full width of the browser. In the center of this bar are the words ‘”Save as” to download Flash video’. Right-click on the link and select “Save as…” from the contextual menu.
In order to keep the process as simple as possible, we’re going to let the Greasemonkey extension do the dirty work. If you have not yet installed the Greasemonkey extension, do so now Firefox 1.5 users must download 0.6.4. You’ll need to install the following Greasemonkey userscript in order to continue: YouTube To Me. You will also find a handy userscript for download videos directly from Google Video.

The easiest way to download videos from YouTube I think is to use one of available free software products out there. I have discovered Ares Tube - free software which is pretty simple and works well. With help of Ares Tube you can download Youtube videos not only from YouTube, but also from Metacafe, Google Video, Blip TV, Daily Motion and MySpace.

Another great feature is video converter who lets you to convert downloaded video file directly into iTunes and next time, when you plug in your iPod, video will be automatically transfered to it.
Another great feature of this soft is built-in browser that allows you to easy browse and search for the videos and download stuff you like. Unfortunately Area Tube is available only for Windows users but for Mac OS X users I can suggest TubeSock soft (it also have Windows version) which basically have all the same features - downloading videos from youtube and convert them to iPod supperted format.

Download YouTube Videos - Google has a solid amount of cash in its pockets, but with all the recent lawsuits against YouTube one has to wonder if it’s time to salvage whatever videos you like from the service and save them somewhere where evil attorneys won’t look – your hard drive.
Luckily, there are literally dozens of tools for downloading videos from YouTube and/or converting those YouTube videos to some format other than .flv. It’s hard to pick the best one, as they all have pluses and minuses. Thus, we’ve chosen 23 YouTube downloader tools we’ve found to be actually working. Here they are, categorized according to the platform they work on:
Web based
1. KeepVid is another simple site. No hassle, works not only for YouTube movies but for a number of other sites, including Google Video, MySpace Video, DailyMotion and others. Again, you have to add the .flv extension by hand.

2. videodownloadx.com doesn’t have a lot of options, but it’s simple, and it works. It also enables you to share the YouTube video with your friends via e-mail. Unfortunately, all the files are called get_video, and you have to add the .flv extension manually.

3. VideoDownloader is very similar to KeepVid, but supports even more video sharing sites, and it’s also available as a Firefox extension. Just like with KeepVid, all downloads are in .flv format. We recommend MediaCoder for free conversion.

4.  Zamzar is an online file format conversion site which can do a lot more than just converting YouTube videos to another format and downloading them to your hard drive, but it’s doing a great job so we had to include it here. Thoroughly tested by us and highly recommended.
