LG has announced the development of the world’s first 480 Hz LCD TV panel. The TV is capable of a refresh rate of 480 images per second. In comparison, most commercially available LCD TVs currently have refresh rates of 120 Hz or 60 Hz.
The electronics company explained “that the technology is enabled by combining existing 240 Hz panels with “scanning backlight”, which repeatedly turns the backlight on and off to reduce motion blur. According to the company, the panel also posts a low motion picture response time of 4 ms, which should eliminate motion blur to provide a realistic out-of-the-window view.”
There are also “a few other new features in this panel, such as technologies to create more contrast and a greater brightness level, as well as the ability to adjust the backlight brightness to reduce the power consumption of the LCD panel.”
A prototype will be shown off at CES and the first consumer TVs will hit North American stores in the Q3 2009.

The Hong-Kong based electronics company AMEX Digital has announced the launch of a new slim Blu-ray drive for both Macs and PCs.
The Portable Blu-ray Super Multi Drive has the design of the MacBook Air’s Superdrive and will allow for the reading and writing of Blu-ray discs in BD-R and BD-RE formats and both full-sized 12cm and mini 8cm sizes. Users can also burn to dual-layer 50GB discs using the drive’s USB 2.0 port.
The company says it’s patented Quiet Drive Technology “reduces the noise level of the drive, while a liquid crystal tilt/blur compensator compensates for warped discs for a more reliable writing process.”
The drive can only burn Blu-ray discs at 2x speeds, which practically makes the drive useless when compared to newer Sony and Buffalo drives which can burn at up to 8x speeds.
The drive is now available, and is retailing for $289 USD.

The large electronics company LG has announced it will be releasing three new PC Blu-ray drives with a price range of $200 USD to $380 USD.
The three drives, the BE06, GBC-H20L, and GBW-H20L are the latest in a successful line from LG. The BE06 is an external model which connects through a USB 2.0 port. It is supposed to be compatible with “all” Blu-ray disc formats, as well as all CD and DVD formats. The drive however, can only write DVDs and CDs at up to 16x and 24x speeds respectively and read BD-R at 6x speed. BD-REs can stream at 2x. That drive will cost $380 USD.
The other two models are internal drives and the GBW-H20L is the only of the three that can write Blu-rays. It “has a read/write capacity of 6x for BD-R discs, and 2x for BD-RE. A 16x speed is retained for DVD+RW/-RW in both models.” The models are listed as $200 USD and $280 USD, respectively.
