Netflix has expanded its Watch Instantly streaming catalog today, striking a major content deal with Relativity Media.
The deal will allow Netflix to compete more directly with premium TV channels such as HBO and Starz, as Relativity Media films will be “licensed directly and exclusively to Netflix for streaming to its subscribers during the “pay TV window.”‘
Many of the blockbuster films will hit Netflix months after they become available on DVD, just like they hit premium stations.
Netflix says “it will be the first time that studio quality theatrical feature films will be streamed via subscription by Netflix instead of being broadcast by the traditional pay providers, and it opens up a new revenue stream for such movies.”
Some of the first movies available under the new deal are “The Fighter,” and “Skyline,” both of which are set for a 2010 release date in theaters and set for a Netflix streaming launch in early 2011.
Relativity has completely financed or co-financed over 200 features, including new films such as “Robin Hood,” “Get Him to the Greek” and “Grown Ups.”

Google has announced that it will begin building an ultra fast broadband network to service up to 500,000 customers around the United States, with speeds advertised at about 100 times the current average speed for broadband connections.
The company will use fiber optic lines, and the entire network will be an experiment. The experiment is whether it can sell more Web ads, if it encourages citizens to be on the Internet more. Although the move would put the company in direct competition with Verizon, Time Warner, Comcast and others, a move to a standalone broadband business seems unlikely for the search giant.
Google says to: “Imagine sitting in a rural health clinic, streaming three-dimensional medical imaging over the web and discussing a unique condition with a specialist in New York. Or downloading a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes. Or collaborating with classmates around the world while watching live 3-D video of a university lecture.”

Universal has announced the launch of the new Blu-ray “Flipper” discs, releases that feature the Blu-ray on one side, and a DVD release on the flip side.
The first films to be made into “flipper” discs are the Bourne Trilogy, which will be released on January 19th, individually. Each of the films will be “flippers,” and will include the feature film and bonus features.
“Universal’s flipper discs are the perfect way for consumers to future-proof their collections while still enjoying their favorite movies on all their existing DVD players,”adds Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.“The flipper disc offers an easy way for viewers to convert to Blu-ray now or at any time in the future, confident in the fact they will be able to experience their home entertainment purchases in the highest quality picture and sound when they do.”
In the press release, Universal uses terms such as “industry-changing,” but I do recall purchasing HD DVD “flippers” in 2007, including Universal films. Why did it take so long for Blu?
