Two weeks ago we reported that Mitchell Baker of Mozilla Europe was quoted as saying that Firefox Mobile was in the works and would be coming before 2010.
It appears however that we may be seeing the alpha stage of the application much sooner, even as soon as a couple of weeks.
Mozilla CEO John Lilly, in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News said that the Firefox Mobile Alphas “could be released in a few weeks.”
The full quote says, “We want to make sure that the Web on mobile is more like the Web than what the mobile industry offers today, which is closed, separate networks and not a very good information-getting experience for the user. The first thing is to bring Firefox to mobile devices. We’re working on that, and we’ll see some alphas in a few weeks.”
Sounds good.

Mozilla has announced that they will be bringing Firefox Mobile to handsets worldwide by 2010 but the alpha testing may come as soon as the end of this year.
There was not much mentioned in terms of details, but Firefox Mobile may have a hard time fighting established mobile browsers such as Opera Mini and Mobile Safari.
In his blog, Mitchell Baker of Mozilla Europe added the following: “I saw one press article wondering if including “have an effective product in the mobile space” in our 2010 goals means that we won’t ship something interesting until 2010. That is not the case at all. We will ship well before then. The intent of this goal was to say: in 2010 when we look at where we are, it should be screamingly obvious that we’ve done this. That means releasing a good product much sooner, seeing good results and acceptance, and seeing those results grow over time.

I have discussed Firefox Mobile (codenamed Fennec) in the past saying that we should see an Alpha pre-version hopefully before the end of the year if it’s ready.“

AOL has announced that the latest update to their popular WinAmp software will give the program access to online music stores.
The update, to version 5.54, lets users buy songs, ringtones, tickets and physical CDs directly from the Jukebox although AOL has not revealed which online music stores will be integrated into the software. There was word that the stores integrated would offer DRM-free MP3s.
Besides the online music store integration, the update “builds in access to AOL Radio’s streaming channels, an ability to find videos and other artist info without leaving the software, and a toolbar to let Firefox and other web browsers control WinAmp.”
The new version is available for free in a Basic version as well as part of the Pro edition which sells for $20 USD and allows for built-in ripping of CDs to any format the user wants.
