RIM has confirmed a second BlackBerry email outage this week, seemingly acknowledging that their systems may not yet be ready to handle the large increase in smartphone owners.
The smartphone maker attributed this outage to a glitch in the latest update to the BBM instant messaging program. The bug cause an “unanticipated database issue within the BlackBerry infrastructure.”
RIM is known for secure and stable emails, and outages can cause corporate customers money, especially if the outages are for extended periods of time.
Adds John Jackson, vice president and wireless analyst at CCS Insight, via the WSJ: “It’s a consequence of the architecture that makes RIM RIM. They invested heavily in upgrading their backup systems after outages in 2007 and 2008, and made some high-profile hires. So that it’s happened twice in a week, albeit with a limited duration and geography, indicates gaps.”

According to a new study performed by Futuresource Consulting, 8 percent of consumers from the UK, France, Germany, and the US admitted to downloading video content such as movies by unauthorized means, usually from file sharing sites and networks.
The study, entitled ‘Living With Digital: Consumer Insights into Entertainment Consumption’, “used a representative sample in each country and provided respondents with a list of legal and illegitimate download sites from which to select.”
France topped the list, with 25 percent of survey takers admitting they pirated video content. The survey took about 625 consumers from each nation.

The civil trial against Mininova, brought forward by the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN, has been postponed one month today.
The outcome of the case will determine whether the torrent indexing site will have to “actively filter” torrents from its index daily. If BREIN is triumphant, Mininova will be forced to remove all .torrent files that lead to unauthorized content such as pirated movies, music or TV shows.
“The reason for this postponement is solely due to personal circumstances of our attorney and has explicitly nothing to do with the content of the case,” says Mininova’s staff.
Additionally, Mininova President Erik Dubbelboer notes:
“The case wont say much about the legality of torrent sites, but it will give more insight into what measures BitTorrent indexers and similar services have to take in order to make sure that they don’t link to illegal content. In particular, it deals with the question of whether or not website owners have to actively filter content. In other words, is a notice and takedown policy sufficient or not.”
