Thanks to the iPhone Dev Team, consumers will soon be able to jailbreak and install apps on their new AppleTVs.
Using a tool dubbed Shatter, users can unlock the Apple TV firmware.
Shatter has already been used to jailbreak the iPod Touch 4 and AppleTV uses the same operating system.
Wired says “the hack was carried out on the firmware restore download that has just been posted by Apple. This file, which contains the entire OS of the Apple TV, is an IPSW file, the file-extension for iPhone and iPad OS files.”
Existing AppleTV hacks may work on the updated devices, and new apps like Hulu on the iPad may be able to work, as well.
Apparently, all the binaries of the new AppleTV are marked iPad-compatible.

The iPhone Dev Team has released the first official iPhone 4 jailbreak this week, using a browser-based exploit.
However, some of the users that have jailbroken their device has reported broken MMS and broken FaceTime.
Hacker “comex” released the option via jailbreakme.com, and visitors to the site on their iPhone 4 devices can start the jailbreaking process right from their phone browser.
The iPhone Dev Team’s hack is the first for the device, despite hacker Geohot’s claims to an iPhone 4 jailbreak last month.
As a note, iPads running iOS 3.2.1 will not be able to jailbreak their devices.
Making this jailbreak different than pretty much every other one before it, is the fact that it is completely browser-based, using the Apple Safari browser.
The hack comes a week after the U.S. Library of Congress officially made jailbreaking legal.

Last week, iPhone Dev Team member “planetbeing” released a video today showing off a huge accomplishment, the Android OS running on a first-gen iPhone.
The hack has been in development for months, and is still in alpha stages. So far the phone only works on the 2G model, with 3G happening likely in the near future. The 3GS, is a whole different ball game, however.
After being hacked, the iPhone can run both Android and the iPhone OS, in a “Bootcamp”-esque way, allowing for the boot of multiple OS on one Apple device.
Today, Androidalot has released instructions and a video on how to run the hack yourself, if you have a iPhone 2G just laying around.
