Sony has said this week that the popular VOD service Vudu will launch on PlayStation 3 consoles starting on November 23rd.
Via the PSN, Vudu will offer 1080p HD and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound streaming.
Vudu says the “PS3 will be the first and only system with dedicated gaming functionality to offer this service,” implying a partnership with the Xbox 360 isn’t in the cards, at least for now.
The streaming movie service currently has 4000 movies available in full HD, and new releases are available the same day as their Blu-ray and DVD counterparts.
Rentals cost $2 for 48 hours.
“PS3 is tailor-made for the high-quality, high-speed VUDU streaming experience,” adds Edward Lichty, general manager, VUDU. “Now with VUDU on PS3, we are able to deliver a completely immersive experience to those loyal to their entertainment system when they want, where they want.”
All new Vudu customers get a $6 credit for signing up.

Later this year Netflix will be expanding their Watch Instantly streaming video service, making it available to Canadian residents.
In addition to being the first service offered by the home video rental giant outside the US, it will also mark the first time they have offered streaming by itself. To date their streaming video offering has been an add on to their popular rent by mail DVD and Blu-ray service.
That’s not likely to be changing any time soon for US customers. When the plan for streaming outside the US was first mentioned last October, CEO Reed Hastings was clear that it was purely due to the logistical issues of shipping discs internationally.
And selling the exclusively online service to Canadians isn’t a sure winner either. Although Netflix has made some headway in licensing new releases and increasing their selection of recent TV episodes for streaming, such arrangements are still the exception.
Canadians interested in the service can go to www.netflix.ca and sign up for email notification when the service launches.

Wal-Mart has created a new online GameCenter this week, a site that will give “first-look” exclusives, game previews and monetary discounts off new releases.
As a launch promotion, Wal-Mart is giving a $50 off discount for any customer pre-ordering three games, or more.
Says Kelly Thompson, VP of merchandising for Walmart.com: “Walmart Gamecenter combines incredible savings with exclusive gaming content all in a compelling and interactive experience online. Gaming enthusiasts will be drawn in by the exclusive content and developer interviews, while moms will appreciate the special savings only Walmart can offer on the hottest video game titles.”
Each month, the GameCenter will update and feature new games, content and special offers.
Additionally, GameCenter customers can trade-in their games and consoles, with the retailer paying all shipping costs.
