Engadget has posted an in-depth preview of the upcoming Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone, dubbed the “Xperia Play”, which should be unveiled officially at the MWC next month.
The Xperia Play has a 4-inch display with 854×450 resolution and will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Although unconfirmed, the device’s multitouch screen will allegedly be powered by a Sony Bravia engine for smoother video playback.
Under the hood, the device appears to run on a single-core processor clocked at 1-1.2GHz, an Adreno 205 GPU and 512MB RAM.
As is standard, the smartphone/handheld will have 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, and an FM receiver plus transmitter.
Physically, the smartphone has 4 buttons, Back/Menu/Home/Search, a 1500mAh battery, USB port, microSD slot and 5MP camera which lacks 720p recording.
For now, the site only has a prototype so not all features (especially the gaming aspects) are fully clear and the editor says the firmware is still very buggy, but everything should be become clearer next month at the Mobile World Congress event.

Following Wednesday’s blurry “spy” video of the device, we now have a nice, clear “hands on” with the upcoming Sony Ericsson PSP Phone (Z1), although the smartphone still does not have any gaming content available for it.
The oft-rumored device could see an official announcement as soon as December 9th.
It will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 1GHz Qualcomm chip, have a 4.1-inch multi-touchscreen, a 5MP camera, 512MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera and 1GB of internal storage.
The smartphone will also have a dedicated gaming app store.
Gaming will be made possible via a slide-out control similar to the PSP.

Engadget has revealed the long awaited PlayStation Phone tonight, posting pictures of a working model of the upcoming device.
There have long been rumors that Sony Ericsson was creating a PSP phone, one that would include the gaming aspects of a PSP while adding phone functionality.
Engadget says the phone will hit the market “soon,” likely in the Q1 2011.
The device will run on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), with a fast 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 512MB RAM, 1GB ROM and a 4.1-inch screen.
In the gaming part of the slide-out, the PSP Phone has a multi-touch touchpad, shoulder buttons and a microSD slot.
