A 33 year old man has been handed a suspended sentence for operating a P2P hub using DirectConnect in Finland. The man received a four month suspended sentence after he was found to be the operator of a DirectConnect hub where he was also sharing a considerable amount of music.
His computers and equipment were originally seized in June 2007 and were found to contain a significant amount of “infringing music” files. He later restarted the hub with new computers, which were seized yet again in October 2007. Records showed that up to 2,000 people were using his hub to share about 80 terabytes of content.
The 33 year old must now pay €307,450 in compensation to rights’ holders in addition to the four months suspended sentence. The decision was made yesterday by a Finnish District Court.
“Imprisonment is the right penalty for this type of deliberate, planned and very harmful conduct in which the administrator facilitates widespread unauthorised file-sharing,” said Antti Kotilainen of CIAPC.

Toshiba claims that it will be the first tech company to ship 64GB Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) memory cards. The company projects that it will begin shipping the new flash memory cards that utilize the exFAT (FAT 64) file system by Spring 2010.
When announced in January earlier this year, it was revealed that the capacity limit would be around 2 terabytes (TB) of data, but 64GB is certainly a long way away from 2TB.
Toshiba’s new cards, according to the company, will support HS104 data transfer technology offering up to 60MB/s write speed and 35MB/s write speed.
Toshiba was mute on how much the new card will cost, but it can of course be expected to be quite high for an SD card.

A team of researchers from the Swinburne University of Technology in Australia have announced today they have created a “five-dimensional” optical media that can hold up to 1.6 terabytes of data, and that could easily be on the market within 10 years.
The researchers used ‘nanoparticles and a “polarization” dimension’ to create the massive storage capacity. The team has already signed a deal with Samsung, who says the disc could potentially hold up to 10 terabytes.

“We were able to show how nanostructured material can be incorporated onto a disc in order to increase data capacity, without increasing the physical size of the disc,” adds Min Gu, part of the team.
“These extra dimensions are the key to creating ultra-high capacity discs.”
The Reuters report explains that “DVDs currently have three spatial dimensions but using nanoparticles the researchers said they were able to introduce a spectral — or color — dimension as well as a polarization dimension.”
