Last year the U.S. Military moved to block access to YouTube from troops and government employees, citing bandwidth usage problems with the services. Now, in co-operation with Seattle startup Delve Networks, it has launched a video sharing website for troops, their families and supporters. Members of the branches of the armed forces, their families, civilian Defense Department employees and supporters can join the service and upload videos.
TroopTube is tightly monitored however, with all video submissions being reviewed by Pentagon employees before they are added to filter out everything from threats to national security to copyright infringing content. Delve developed the technology to approve and sort incoming videos, as well as technology that makes several different video sizes and streams whichever is best suited for the users’ Internet connection.
Delve Chief Executive Alex Castro called TroopTube a “retention tool” which is aimed at a new generation of soldiers who bring laptops and other portable gadgets to the front line with them. “A lot of people are excited in the company to be doing something for the people who make sacrifices,” said Castro. “We’re proud of this.”
Last year the Pentagon opted to block YouTube and other video sharing sites, as well as social networking sites such as MySpace, citing security fears and bandwidth problems.

If you want to get videos off YouTube you are not alone! Millions of people use YouTube and are damn near addicted to it (I know I am) and many of these YouTube addicts want to grab those videos for their own home computer, iPod or other portable device for a variety of reasons.
Before YouTube takes it down! - Often the best stuff is taken down by YouTube because some company gets its panties in a twist and demands it be removed. If you can save it quickly then you will not lose it!
Slow net connection - If you internet connection is quit slow you do not want to reload those videos every time, just once then saving them is a lot easier for your favorites.
Mobile access - While getting internet anywhere you want is a current technology it is expensive and YouTube takes a lot of bandwidth making viewing YouTube from a mobile device long and costly.
Presentations - Some fantastic videos can be used for business and school presentations but you do not always have a net connection and even if you do waiting for a long video to load can ruin your flow.
The problem is to get videos off YouTube you need to be very tech savvy and understand the file formats and the way it is embedded into the page code because YouTube does everything it can to stop you downloading the videos (unlike Google vids).

Download YouTube movies to playback movies on their site. In addition to being universally supported on most computers, one of the many benefits of using Flash from a publishers standpoint is making it harder for people to download the movies. It’s not impossible and depending on how the Flash movies are played, you can sometimes simply dig in your Temp directory for the file because the server actually downloads the entire movie to your computer during playback. If you find a YouTube video you like, copy the URL to the page the video is on, paste it into the KeepVid download look up, choose YouTube from the list of sites and click the Download button.
For YouTube movies, it’s easier to let someone else do all the hard work of locating the file. My favorite solution for download YouTube movies is a Website called KeepVid, which locates downloads from a handful of Internet sites. It’s one of the few sites I bother bookmarking.
KeepVid will find the download link and provide instructions on how to download it.
Follow the directions and you’re almost done.YouTube uses the FLV Flash format, which isn’t immediately playable. You also need an app to play it back. Windows users will want to grab a copy of FLV Player to watch the files on your computer.
A better option is the shareware app SWF.max, which shows thumbnails of the movies and adds a number of features to control playback.
